Description

ArkeoGIS is an online platform for pooling and querying spatialized scientific data about the past, mainly in archaeology and environmental sciences, through a mapping interface available in German, English, Spanish, and French. Its databases come from institutional researchers, graduate students, private companies, heritage management services, palaeoenvironmentalists, geographers, and historians, and the platform currently aggregates about a hundred datasets, with the Upper Rhine, the Mediterranean basin, and the Near East best documented. Registered users get a customizable project space, can display results on several base maps, and export them to other tools as CSV. A multi-chronology system lets users aggregate information from prehistory to the present. Because ArkeoGIS is a web-GIS reserved for identified professionals, an open-access counterpart, ArkeOpen, was launched in April 2023. It draws on the same data but needs no login and adds easier citation and interoperability.
