Description

ArkeOpen is an open-access web interface for consulting, querying, and cross-referencing archaeological data drawn from the ArkeoGIS research platform. It was launched in April 2023 and uses the same data as ArkeoGIS, but requires no login or password, in line with open science principles. ArkeoGIS itself remains a web-GIS reserved for identified professionals, whereas ArkeOpen makes the datasets available to a wider public. unistra

The data come from research work, theses, inventories, and books in archaeology, history, and the environmental sciences, and are shared by their authors and publishers. The interface lets users adjust the chronology and filter the map by criteria such as periods, thesaurus terms, and authors, with detailed records displayed in a side pane.

The tools were developed under the supervision of the Université de Strasbourg under a free software license, with funding from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research in 2022. The platform is run by the University of Strasbourg and the MISHA on the Huma-Num infrastructure. ArkeoGIS is a member of the MASA consortium and contributes to promoting the FAIR principles in the archaeological community.
