Description

The Syriac Gazetteer is an open-access geographical reference work of Syriaca.org for places relevant to Syriac studies. It is growing from an initial publication of over two thousand place records, encoded in TEI XML. Entries cover places named in Syriac texts (such as Harqel), places of interest to historians of Syriac culture (such as Dura-Europos), and places where scholarship on Syriac is being produced (such as Japan). Maps are provided for places whose location is known; the gazetteer also includes entries not located or even locatable, including mythological and ahistorical places. A second, revised and expanded edition was published in 2019, edited by David A. Michelson and William L. Potter. The first edition was edited by Thomas A. Carlson and David A. Michelson.
