Description

MAPA seeks to built a comprehensive Linked Open Data database of geographical features in Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Uruk, and the connections between them, in order to better understand the shape and scope of the Urukean cityscape. Using Recogito, MAPA seeks to annotate thousands of Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid texts, tracking and compiling mentions of geographical features, with a focus on hydrological features (rivers, canals, etc.) and the settlements and cities that interact with them.

By applying network analysis tools such as Gephi to this database, MAPA seeks to more completely understand the canal network of Uruk in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, and use this understanding to link physical remains to places and features named in ancient texts.

MAPA is a member of the Pelagios Network.

MAPA is funded by a grant from the Israel Science Foundation.
