Description

The aim of this project is to present the surviving fragments of Eratosthenes of Cyrene in an accessible and searchable format, with a critical Greek text of the fragments, an English translation and a detailed commentary.

Eratosthenes was one of the best known scientists of antiquity. He studied in Athens before moving in the mid-third century BC to Alexandria, the cultural centre of the Hellenistic world, where he spent the rest of his long life working and studying in the library. The variety of his interests is unmatched: he worked on astronomy and mathematics, on geography, philosophy, chronology, history, philology and grammar, as well as being a celebrated poet.

There are hundreds of fragments of Eratosthenes. We are currently entering fragments on philological, linguistic and chronological topics, while fragments concerning other fields of Eratosthenes’ activity will follow.
