The Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (IRHT) is an independent institute within the CNRS (UPR 841). It is devoted to fundamental research on medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The textual histories of works written in the major languages of the Mediterranean Basin (Latin, romance languages, Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Arabic) are treated from all aspects: the material support, writing, textual content, decoration, iconography, diffusion, and reception.

Projects

The Institute produces a number of catalogues, and repertories, including:

  • Medium: a fundamental comprehensive catalogue of medieval manuscripts
  • BVMM: virtual library of medieval manuscripts
  • Bibale: a database describing the history of the transmission of texts through the ancient and modern collections and their owners
  • Bude: a database providing information on the transmission of ancient and medieval works in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
  • CALD: Corpus of Arabic Legal documents
  • E-Ktobe: manuscrits syriaques
  • FAMA: "FAMA compiles information on the number of surviving witnesses of the most widely read medieval texts in Latin" (from the project's page)
  • Initiale: catalogue of illuminated manuscripts
  • Jonas: repertory of medieval texs and manuscripts in Oc and Oil language
  • Onomasticon Arabicum: prosopography of medieval Islam
  • Pinakes: Greek texts and manuscripts

Tools developed

  • Codicologia: multilingual vocabulary for the description of manuscripts
