Description

Aims and scope

From the project website (accessed 2020-09-01 - translated from Italian):

EDV (Epigraphic Database Vernacular) is the first sytematic collection of the entire patrimony of epigraphic texts, written in the vernacular in Italy. It includes inscriptions datable to the chronological interval between the ninth and fifteenth centuries, intended for any function - public or private - and written on any surface (stone, plaster, canvas, fabric, glass, terracotta, metal, bone, etc.).

All the inscriptions that present a text in a language other than Latin, or in a script that reveals the intention, on the part of the writer, to compose a text in the vernacular are registered.

Data

The database, built by using the EpiDoc Front-End Services (EFES) platform, includes images, as well as material descriptions and geographical data on the inscriptions. The text of each inscription can be downloaded in the EpiDoc XML format.

Interoperability

The epigraphical database and the search platform are interoperable with the EAGLE Europeana Network.
