Description

Diogenes is a free, open source tool for searching and browsing the databases of ancient texts, primarily in Latin and Greek, that were once published on CD-ROM by the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the Packard Humanities Institute. These databases, which must be acquired separately, include the TLG (up to version E), the PHI corpus of Latin texts up to AD 200, the Duke Documentary Papyri collection, and the PHI-sponsored corpora of ancient inscriptions.

The Diogenes Desktop Application

The classic version of Diogenes is an application that you can install on your desktop and laptop. Once downloaded, it does not require a connection to the Internet and provides the user with offline access to full morphological analysis and lexica for Latin and Greek. It has been in existence for over 20 years; version 4, released in 2019, marked a major upgrade.

Some features of the Diogenes desktop application are:

  • Reading texts: click on a word to see its definition
  • Morphological analysis from Perseus
  • Lexica: Liddell-Scott-Jones and Lewis-Short (originally from Perseus; now corrected by Logeion).
  • Basic search: within a corpus or within an author
  • Advanced search: inflectional variants, co-occurrence of multiple words within a given scope
  • Lookup inflected forms and dictionary entries
  • Create convenient customized subsets of particular texts for repeated searching
  • For the TLG, create subsets based upon chronological, geographical and other criteria
  • Click on a citation in a lexicon entry to jump to its context
  • Export texts as TEI-compliant XML

Diogenes is free software, licensed under the GPL, version 3.

DiogenesWeb

This is a new web-based version of Diogenes that runs in your browser; unlike the desktop application, it does require an Internet connection. It aims to provide similar functionality to the Diogenes desktop application, but with an interface optimized for handheld devices. It operates upon XML files of Latin and Greek texts, which can be either publicly available or in your private cloud storage.

DiogenesWeb includes access to a number of open access corpora:

  • Perseus texts (Greek, Latin and translations)
  • 1000 Years of Greek (from the Open Greek and Latin project)
  • DigilibLT
  • Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (open access CSEL texts only)

In addition, you can convert texts from the TLG and PHI CD-ROM corpora to XML by using the Diogenes desktop application, and then upload these to a folder in your private cloud storage (Dropbox only, as of yet). You give DiogenesWeb access to that folder in a secure manner and you can then read those texts on your handheld device.

DiogenesWeb currently works well for reading through texts, but search functionality has not been implemented yet.
