Description

The "Stone of Rosette" is one of the most famous artifacts of antiquity. It is the visitor highlight at the British Museum in London. Based on this trilingual object, J. -F. Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphs in 1822.

In teaching, the content of the inscription plays a minor role. It is a decree with resolutions passed by a synod of priests with the Pharaoh. These include provisions on religious practice such as the erection of statues of consecration, temple building or the introduction of new cults. It also provides information on political history. Such decrees should be established in all temples of Egypt. It is of interest to understand the communication of the decisions of political and religious forces to the population with students.

The main part of this project is to understand the language and content of the text and teach students how to read all three languages in the original.
