Description

The GESHAEM (The Graeco-Egyptian State - Hellenistic Archives from Egyptian Mummies) project focuses on the study of a collection of papyri dating from the early Ptolemaic period, assembled by Pierre Jouguet and now preserved at the Sorbonne. This collection contains administrative and fiscal documents written in Greek and Egyptian from bilingual archives of the 3rd century BCE, which were later reused to produce mummy cartonnage discovered in the Fayoum region.

This research on an existing corpus is accompanied by a new study of the cartonnage and the discovery of new papyri during the analysis and restoration of those that were not destroyed when the papyri were extracted in the early 20th century.

The project aims to enhance our understanding of the administration of the Fayoum region during the first century of Greek rule in Egypt, a period marked by numerous changes in the country’s administration and agricultural management.
