Author
nodegoat is conceptualised and developed by LAB1100
Description
Taken from the project website (Accessed 01-09-2020):
<blockquote>nodegoat is a web-based research and data-visualisations environment. It allows scholars to build datasets based on their own data model and offers relational modes of analysis with spatial and chronological forms of contextualisation. By combining these elements within one environment, scholars are able to instantly process, analyse and visualise complex datasets relationally, diachronically and spatially; trailblazing. nodegoat follows an object-oriented approach throughout its core functionalities. Borrowing from actor-network theory this means that people, events, artefacts, and sources are treated as equal: objects, and hierarchy depends solely on the composition of the network: relations. This object-oriented approach advocates the self-identification of individual objects and maps the correlation of objects within the collective.

You are free to implement a data model of your own design, or create a data model in alignment with existing vocabularies (e.g. Dublin Core, or the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model).</blockquote>

Nodegoat offers free individual accounts to researchers, and makes available a good number of user cases and tutorials via their website.
Description
The Manar al-Athar photo-archive, based at the University of Oxford, provides high resolution, searchable images for teaching, research, publication, and heritage work. These images of archaeological sites, with buildings and art, cover the areas of the former Roman Empire which later came under Islamic rule (such as Syro-Palestine/the Levant, Arabia, Egypt and North Africa), and adjoining regions, such as Armenia and Georgia. The chronological range is from Alexander the Great (i.e. from about 300 BC) through the Islamic period.

The photo-archive is open-access so that it can be freely used by anyone anywhere in the world. Photographs can be freely downloaded as original high-resolution images (tif images) without watermarks, making them immediately available in a format suitable for publication or research, simply by acknowledging the source.

The Manar al-Athar photo-archive in in continuous development. In April 2020, it had more than 70 000 photographs online, and strengths include Late Antiquity (AD 250–750), the period of transition from paganism to Christianity and, in turn, to Islam, especially religious buildings (temples, churches, synagogues, mosques) and monumental art (including floor mosaics), early Islamic art (paintings, mosaics, relief sculpture), as well as Roman and early Islamic (Umayyad) architecture, and iconoclasm.
Description
Coptic SCRIPTORIUM (Sahidic Corpus Research: Internet Platform for Interdisciplinary multilayer Methods) is a project being developed by Caroline T. Schroeder (the University of the Pacific) and Amir Zeldes (Georgetown University) to create an interdisciplinary platform for search and computational research in texts in the Coptic language, particularly the Sahidic dialect.

As a fully open-source platform, the Coptic SCRIPTORIUM technologies and corpus will function as a collaborative environment for digital research by any scholars working in Coptic. It will provide tools to process texts, a searchable richly-annotated corpus of texts processed in part with such tools, a collaborative platform for scholars to use and contribute to the project, and research results generated from the tools and corpus.

The project has developed the first freely available part-of-speech tagger for any phase of the Egyptian language. It also has character converters to convert text from some older Coptic fonts into Coptic Unicode. It includes a search page for the Comprehensive Coptic Lexicon (v1.2) containing 11263 entries and 31847 forms of Egyptian-Coptic and Greek-Coptic datasets. The lexicon has been produced together with the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae project ("Strukturen und Transformationen des Wortschatzes der ägyptischen Sprache", BBAW) and the “Database and Dictionary of Greek Loanwords in Coptic” (DDGLC, Freie Universität Berlin).
Description
Nomisma.org is a collaborative project to provide stable digital representations of numismatic concepts according to the principles of Linked Open Data. These take the form of http URIs that also provide access to reusable information about those concepts, along with links to other resources. The canonical format of nomisma.org is RDF/XML, with serializations available in JSON-LD (including geoJSON-LD for complex geographic features), Turtle, KML (when applicable), and HTML5+RDFa 1.1.

While the URIs provided by nomisma.org are stable, the project is in progress and subject to constant expansion and ongoing correction. This is particularly the case for the information provided about each nomisma.org identifier.

The information provided by nomisma.org has been provided by a wide community of scholars and institutions.

Nomisma.org also hosts the Numismatic Description XML Schema

There are two Github repositories associated with the project. The application code is available in https://github.com/nomisma/framework. The RDF/XML data and ontology versions are in https://github.com/nomisma/data.

Example Nomisma.org URIs
* http://nomisma.org/id/axis. The 'axis' is the angular relationship between the obverse and reverse of a coin.
* http://nomisma.org/id/ephesus. The 'mint' at Ephesus. Nomisma relates this numismatic concept to other URIs such as wikipedia, Pleiades, Getty thesauri, * and the British Museum.
* http://nomisma.org/id/quinarius. Nomisma.org maintains lists of Roman and other denominations. To indicate that “quinarius” is a concept within Roman numismatics, the Dublin Core property "dcterms:source" relates this URI to http://nomisma.org/id/roman_numismatics.
Description
Alpheios builds evidence-based, open-source software to support worldwide study of classical languages and literatures. The Alpheios Reading Tools enhance any text you read in the browser by adding clickable access to dictionary entries, morphological analyses, inflection tables and grammars for any Latin or Ancient Greek word. A subset of these resources are available for Classical Arabic and Persian. Personal vocabulary lists and learning games will be added in coming releases.

The Alpheios tools can be installed as extensions to the Chrome and Firefox browsers (further instructions here). Support for the Safari browser and mobile devices is under development.

Alpheios will also be released as a Javascript library which can be embedded in pages published on the web to provide access to its functionality without requiring use of the browser extensions.

Other Alpheios modules include a treebank editor and a translation alignment editor.
Description
The Epigraphische Datenbank Heidelberg or Epigraphic Database Heidelberg (EDH) is a searchable resource that provides texts, bibliographic citations, descriptive data and images for Latin and Greek inscriptions of the Roman Empire. EDH forms an essential component of the Electronic Archive of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (EAGLE), functioning as the primary repository for inscriptions from the Roman provinces. It is directed by Christian Witschel, who took over in 2007 from the project’s founder, Géza Alföldy. Witschel is assisted by a research team at Heidelberg, and a growing number of external collaborators worldwide. The project was founded in 1986, and put its first data online in 1997.

As of December 2019, EDH contained texts for over 80,000 inscriptions from 30,000 findspots, together with full records for over 16,000 bibliographic items and over 38,000 images. Many of the texts in EDH are revised or corrected from previous print publications on the basis of autopsy, or with reference to a squeeze or photograph. An increasing number of print-oriented epigraphic projects are simultaneously providing EDH with electronic copies of newly edited inscriptions that will appear in their publications. The EDH site is available in both German and English, and the interface permits both Simple and Advanced Search, which enables users to discover content by searching a combination of the many descriptive, bibliographic and full-text fields in the three databases that house the project’s data: the Epigraphic Text Database, the Epigraphic Bibliography and the Photographic Database.

EDH hosts an Open Data Repository in which it makes available several datasets under a CC BY-SA 4.0 licence, including the inscriptions and their metadata in EpiDoc XML, photo metadata in CIDOC-CRM XML, bibliography in BibTeX, inscriptions including prosopography in RDF, and geographical information in GeoJSON. Its images are made available via an IIIF API. Canonical URLs have been established for all inscriptions, images, bibliographical and geographical records. EDH also provides a detailed description of EDH's databases and an overview of options for data reuse in Frank Grieshaber's article Epigraphic Database Heidelberg - Data Reuse Options.

At the end of 2021 the funding for EDH expired, and the project now has no full-time staff and will no longer be developed or expanded. Reuse and development of the open project data is encouraged to extend the lifetime of the content of the project.
Description
The project Beta maṣāḥǝft: Manuscripts of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung) is a long-term project funded within the framework of the Academies' Programme (coordinated by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities) under survey of the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg. The funding will be provided for 25 years, from 2016–2040. The project is hosted by the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies at the Universität Hamburg. It aims at creating a virtual research environment that shall manage complex data related to the predominantly Christian manuscript tradition of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Highlands.

You are very welcome to join us and contribute to the digitization and digital description of the manuscript tradition of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Highlands.

About
<p> The Digital Periegesis Project aims to trace, map and analyse Pausanias’s spatial (re)imagining of Greece by using semantic annotation to capture, organise, visualise and analyse the spatial form of Pausanias’s narrative and the forms of space within the narrative. </p>
History
<p>Periegesis Hellados is the title of a work by a certain Pausanias of Magnesia, who was writing in the second century CE/AD. Known in English as the Description of Greece, the term periegesis derives from the verb periēgeisthai, “to lead or show around”. It is this double sense of movement (through space) and description (of place) that we wish to explore in this digital periegesis.</p>
Infrastructure
In response to technical and conceptual challenges, the digital Periegesis team make use of a platform which facilitates working collaboratively with an openly licenced digital text of Pausanias’s Description. Developed by the Pelagios Network, Recogito an open access free-to-use browser-based platform, enables the researcher with no specialist coding skills to annotate space in documents and pictures.
NB#2: please don't feel the need to add pages here if you have already created them (we have wiki history for that); this is really a to-do list for people to draw on for future editing events.
==Description== Taken from the project page, 2025-12-01 <blockquote>This project, led by Dr Stephen Gadd and Colin Greenstreet, aims to record the condition and development of highways (both roads and navigable waterways) in England and Wales between 1530 and 1680, the period during which began the network’s transformation from one serving primarily local agricultural markets to one fit for an emerging industrial economy. Rather than identifying wholly new infrastructure, we hope to discover when and where network stresses occurred and were remedied, and when particular highway sections became identified as ‘principal routes’. Such analysis will help to identify the geographic scope and scale of industrial development and decline.<blockquote>

This is an admin page to control the wishlist of new articles or pages to add to the Wiki in monthly editing sprints or similar collective sessions. Links will turn from red to blue (and eventually be moved to the DigiClass/Done page) as they are created. Please don't just delete a row after creating the page—it serves as a useful reminder of recent development.

NB#1: if you use a different title for the page, please change it here so it turns blue!

NB#2: please don't feel the need to add pages here if you have already created them (we have wiki history for that); this is really a to-do list for people to draw on for future editing events.

* See also External lists of projects for more sources to trawl for candidate new pages.
* See also Pages that need work for existing pages that have been identified as in need of attention
* See also Categories that need work (to add, remove, reorganise, describe better, etc.)
* Recently added pages may especially benefit from checking and improvement
* A list of all Talk pages in the Wiki may also flag up issues in need of attention or discussion
<blockquote><p>The Museum was established by the University's first professor of Classics, Professor P.N. Ure, and his wife, Dr A.D. Ure, who until her death in 1976 acted as curator. Their aim was to build up a collection of that would be representative of the different areas of manufacture of Greek pottery, as well as a glimpse into the world of the ancient Greeks, both in daily life and as tomb offerings. The Museum also contains a number of Egyptian antiquities, mainly from Thebes, Memphis, Meydum and Abydos, including material excavated by Flinders Petrie and Garstang. The Gallery gives an overview of the collection, as it is displayed in the museum and the themes into which they're organised.</p>
From the project website (accessed 2020-11-15):
<blockquote>
<p>Illuminated Dante Project (IDP) aims to provide a systematic survey and an accurate description of those early illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy (miniatures’ extended apparatuses, historiated initials, elaborated friezes, drawings, sketches, diagrams, schemes) revealing up to the smallest meaningful reference to the poem or to a commentary accompanying the poem. Such a crucial work of classification will be accompanied by the setting up of the biggest high-definition image archive of the Divine Comedy, in which both linguistic and figurative codes of the Divine Comedy intersect in a multi-disciplinary viewpoint availing itself of the IT means.
By the creation of both an image archive and a database of the earliest illustrations of the Divine Comedy, presented in a charming and user-friendly architecture, IDP will add an indispensable research and knowledge tool to the already existing online academic resources on Dante’s world (Dante online, Digital Dante, Dartmouth Dante Project, Princeton Dante Project).</p>
<p>So far, IDP has already created a finding list of about 280 manuscripts dating and datable between the 14th and the 15th centuries, and held in libraries, museums and archives worldwide. </p></blockquote>
From project website (accessed 2023-12-05)

<blockquote>Our understanding of the Black Death, the plague pandemic that ravaged Europe, the Middle East, and north Africa between 1346 and 1353, has been transformed in the past 15 years due to new developments in genetics. An evolutionary history of the causative organism of plague, Yersinia pestis, allows us now to track plague’s movements across vast landscapes and demonstrate the connected stories linking outbreaks from China to Spain to sub-Saharan Africa. Just as the geographical footprint of the Second Plague Pandemic has grown, so, too, has its chronological scope. We can now demonstrate that a sustained proliferation of strains of Y. pestis started in the late 12th or early 13th century, and lasted up to the 19th century. This project serves as a portal for researchers from all disciplinary backgrounds, allowing them to find the best methodological work with links to biological, archaelogical, and documentary databases.</blockquote>
From the archive website (accessed 2017-06-22):

<blockquote>
<p> The Photographic Archive of the BSR includes over 100,000 items, prints and negatives. A number of unique collections of 19th century photographs found their way into the BSR and out of these the Archive grew to include later collections, which document the research and activities of the BSR up to the present day. The majority of these are still unknown outside the BSR and most are not yet catalogued or published.
</p>
<p> The increase in activities and events relating to the Photographic Archive was triggered in 2002 by a generous three-year grant from The Getty Foundation which funded the cataloguing and organization of three 19th century collections of photographs. A second two-year grant from The Getty Foundation in 2007 funded the cataloguing and organization of part of the J.B. Ward-Perkins collection (more information in Projects) and the creation of this website. </p>
</blockquote>

The archive also includes prints, maps, documents, manuscripts, paintings, drawings and postcards from the BSR collections.
* Chiara Fedriani

Description
While the WordNet specification affords a flexible model for creating lexical and semantic knowledge-banks for languages, one major oversight has been its inattention to figurative usage. Synsets, which represent the meanings of words, are attributed to lemmas without any indication of whether the relation between the signifier and the signified is one of literal, metonymic, or metaphoric signification.

For this reason, as part of the development of the Latin WordNet, William Short of the University of Exeter and Chiara Fedriani of the University of Genoa have undertaken a joint project to extend the WordNet framework to be able to capture distinctions in figurative usage at the level of word sense as well the kinds of large-scale figurative patterns that have now been shown to operate in Latin semantics supra-lexically.

In line with theories of embodiment in cognitive linguistics, the Lexicon Translaticium Latinum in fact treats metaphor as a pervasive structuring device of language that operates not only at the level of the lexicon (where mappings can be shown to motivate specific pathways of figurative extension of words’ senses) but also at the level of grammar (where they may motivate specific forms, and meanings, of syntactic constructions).

Besides providing a way of distinguishing figurative from literal senses of words, the Lexicon therefore provides data structures for encoding embodied conceptual metaphors as mappings between synsets, understood as discrete concepts.

The WordNet ontology has also been enriched in order to capture image schemas (gestalt experiential structures) as abstractions over sets of related synsets (such as CONTAINER, which is instantiated by the meanings of a wide set of semantically coherent lexemes referring to position in or out of bounded spatial regions – also being interpreted metaphorically, however, of other domains like SOCIETY or EMOTIONS or PHYSICAL STATES). In this way, the bodily basis of many concepts can be represented, as well as the metaphorical projection of sensorimotor concepts to more abstract domains.

What’s more, the metaphorical mappings that motivate specific pathways of semantic extension in the lexicon can be organized into complex systems via different kinds of relations (superordination, subordination, extension, elaboration, and so on) to capture the highly structured nature of metaphorical conceptualization. Accordingly, by encoding information about the network of figurative relationships that characterize the semantic system of Latin (their scope, frequency, and diachronic productivity), the Lexicon will open a window on this system at different levels of granularity -- from high-order image schemas to their more specific instantiations in concrete as well as metaphorically-defined abstract concepts.

The Lexicon should not be understood, then, as a mere repository of figurative usages in Latin that constitutes only an additional layer on top of the WordNet. Instead, it is conceived as a comprehensive model of the richly interconnected system of knowledge itself that Latin speakers relied upon in speaking and thinking in diverse contexts of symbolic expression.
