Description
In 2018, Ekaterini Mitsiou initiated the establishment of an online digital platform in order to create a prosopographical database for the Lascarid Period (PLAS, 1204-1258 CE). PLAS closes a lacuna between other prosopographies for the Byzantine Empire (the Prosopography of the Byzantine World at King's College on the one hand and the Prosopographisches Lexikon der Palaiologenzeit of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, on the other hand).
At the same time, this initiative is intended to serve as the digital core of a more far- reaching prosopography of late medieval Mediterranean and beyond; therefore, a cooperation has been established with the ENCHANT project (Entangled Charters of Anatolia, 1200-1300, funded by the Austrian Science Funds FWF) of Johannes Preiser-Kapeller. Via the use of the same database platform, immediate connections and synergies between this project and PLAS are created.
For the moment, the PLAS-platform is online, but still in an early stage and accessible only via password. If you are however interested in the project, please contact Ekaterini Mitsiou.

Technical information
The technical core of PLAS is the database system Open Atlas, which is an open source software developed in Vienna for the storage and entanglement of complex and ambiguous historical and archaeological data. The five basic entities Actor (individuals, groups, and institutions), Event (of any kind), Place (localities from single buildings up to entire regions), Source (of any kind) and Reference (scholarly literature) can be connected in any combination. At the same time, temporal as well spatial uncertainties can be represented and mapped in all possible forms.
A so-called “hierarchy tree builder” equally allows for a flexible organization of categorisations, attributes and linkages according to the needs of individual projects and researchers. Furthermore, texts (in all Unicode fonts) and images can be uploaded in order to enrich data entries.
OpenAtlas is based on an internationally established data ontology standard (CIDOC- CRM), which guarantees interoperability with other database systems. Equally, data can be exported to standard GIS-software, web-based viewers or network analytical tools for further (also interactive) visualisation and analysis.
Description
In 2018, Ekaterini Mitsiou initiated the establishment of an online digital platform in order to create a prosopographical database for the Lascarid Period (PLAS, 1204-1258 CE). PLAS closes a lacuna between other prosopographies for the Byzantine Empire (the Prosopography of the Byzantine World at King´s College on the one hand and the Prosopographisches Lexikon der Palaiologenzeit of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, on the other hand).

Taken from the project website and translated into English (Accessed 2023-09-19):
<blockquote>This page offers a list of digitized manuscripts from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana that can be freely accessed through online viewing. This list will be periodically updated with the addition of new digitized manuscripts.

Any user can access the public consultation of digital copies free of charge by following two main routes:

I) through direct consultation of the catalogue record of the manuscript of one's interest starting from its shelfmark: in this way the user, using the catalog to search through the shelfmark for the manuscript in which they are interested, will be able to access free public viewing of the digital copy by following the <Visualizza la copia digitale> link specifically inserted within the detail page of each catalogue record;

II) through the consultation of the summary page, ideally browsing through the digital collection of the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana through the list of digitized manuscripts, moreover recognizable thanks to the IIIF icon.</blockquote>
Based on an already existing focus on Byzantine Sigillography, the strategic concept DiBS - Digital Byzantine Studies developed in cooperation with the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH) aims at the innovative further development of a cluster of four Byzantine so-called auxiliary disciplines - Sigillography, Numismatics, Epigraphy and Greek Manuscript Studies. The concept is based on research-based teaching and implements the following measures: (1) Object-related scientific research of collections, processing of superordinate historical questions and interpretation of historical knowledge. (2) Design of new courses (online courses, streamed lectures, asynchronous teaching units, webinars and podcasts) for existing BA and MA programs as a polyvalent course offering. Establishment of a new supplementary module "Digital Byzantine Studies" and integration into other ancient studies programs and into the Digital Humanities. ==Description==
The project DigiByzSeal aims to harness digital tools to enhance the study of Byzantine sigillography, focusing on the vast number of informative seals from Byzantium. The initiative will publish and analyze four major seal collections, improve the encoding standard SigiDoc, utilize Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) for seal presentation, and introduce resources like geodata. A centralized sigillographic portal will be developed for global searches. To ensure the longevity and impact of these digital tools, resources will be conserved by major research infrastructures, while knowledge-sharing and training will be emphasized to enrich the field and reach a broader audience.
