The Digital Classicist Wiki contrains three broad types of page:

Typically when implementing a search engine for a digital corpus, one wants to enable discovery not only of occurrences of exact word forms in the query but also of other inflections of the search terms. For example if you search Google for "digital classicism", your results will include [[Digital Classicist]] and even though "classicist" is not the exact word "classicism", you may be interested in the result. The same applies even more to highly flective languages such as Greek and Latin (this is, after all, how people are taught to use the dictionaries --- you have to know, or predict, the lemma of a word to be able to look up its meaning and other information on it).

The lemma dictionaries typically connect many occurrences of inflected word forms to their lemma form, and act as a mediator between a query (or the one who asks it) and a database, a corpus, or a text collection.

For Greek and Latin, the foremost freely available lemma dictionaries are included in the [[Morpheus]] source as XML files.

A related problem is that of parsing an inflected form, that is of performing a morphological analysis of that word. For example, saying that 'hominis' is genitive singular of lemma 'homo, -inis'. This can aid in lemmatisation because often multiple lemma forms can be inflected to the same inflected form, meaning that looking up the inflected form in a lemma dictionary will yield multiple results for the lemma form. This is why lemmatisation software and online services typically also provide a morphological analysis of the inflected form, so they act both as lemmatisers and parsers.

Disambiguating to the correct lemma form is a difficult problem, and parsing words in context to their correct part of speech can aid in this immensely. One approach is to use software such as [http://www.ims.uni-stuttgart.de/projekte/corplex/TreeTagger/ TreeTagger] trained to your language with a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treebank Treebank] (such as the [http://perseusdl.github.io/treebank_data/ Perseus Treebanks]).

Numerous services and tools provide for any word in a given ancient text the possible lexico-morphological combinations (e.g., τῶν could be 6 possibilities, lexeme ὁ or ὅς, in masculine, feminine, or neuter forms). Such data is useful in many contexts, especially pedagogical. But such data will include many forms that are, for the context, incorrect. Some scholarly research questions require well-curated data sets, where alternative lexico-morphological forms are eliminated, weighted, or qualified. To curate a lexicon-morphological dataset can be time consuming (due in part to interpretive difficulties), but enormously profitable, since such data can be queried in sophisticated ways (e.g., in this corpora, how much more frequent are first-person aorists than third-person indicatives?). Further, such curated data can help refine other sets of lexico-morphological data, by priming an algorithm with likelihood of forms.

The Guide also includes a sourcebook of key ancient testimonies to Evagrius and his reception, in English translation, as well as a checklist of images from the ancient world.

The Guide takes relatively new approaches to open-access academic publishing in the digital humanities, and so is anticipated to develop over the coming years. Future editions will include a manuscript checklist, images of manuscripts, transcriptions of those manuscripts, and open-source critical editions of Evagrius's writings.

The 2025 edition of the GEP introduced comprehensive lemmatized word concordances in Greek and English, presented as keyword in context (KWIC) indexes.

<h3>History</h3>
<p>vHMML is an initiative of the [[Hill Museum and Manuscript Library]]. The project began as a partnership between HMML staff and developers from the Center for Digital Humanities at Saint Louis University (James Ginther, PI) and the Carolingian Canon Law Project at the University of Kentucky (Abigail Firey, PI), with initial support from a 2012 National Leadership Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, supplemented by the Arcadia Fund.</p>

<p>vHMML 2.0 with Reading Room launched in August 2016. Even before the launch of vHMML 1.0, the HMML team was working on a virtual Reading Room that would be the centerpiece of vHMML 2.0. The task required a comprehensive makeover of OLIVER, HMML's online manuscript catalog first developed in the late 1990s. The choice of Mirador, a IIIF-compliant image viewer, and the creation of a new metadata schema to replace OLIVER, put Reading Room at the forefront of developments in manuscript description for digital environments. Reading Room was funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. The new catalog database that replaced OLIVER was funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Improvements to vHMML 2.0 were released in the spring of 2018 as the initial results of a Digital Humanities Advancement Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.</p>

<p>vHMML 3.0, a complete reworking of the project with added data-sharing features, was launched in a series of releases between April and September 2018. The new design is optimized for simpler navigation and easier access to search options. Content across the site, including metadata in Reading Room, is now discoverable in web searches as a result of Search Engine Optimization. FIHRIST is an evolving union catalogue, for Islamic and other Middle Eastern manuscripts. Libraries and independent projects can contact the Board of Directors to receive training and advice before contributing their manuscript descriptions. To keep within time and budget, the founding partners initially focused on minimal descriptions, while stipulating the incorporation of key features, including original script, standardised transliteration, VIAF headings for names and basic Subject headings (LCSH) where given, to enhance access and interoperability with other systems. The project is preparing a new edition of the Frankish capitularies, a pivotal corpus of legal sources from the European Middle Ages. Their history of transmission is rather unique due to the ways their dissemination took place: mostly they were transmitted within collections carried out by attendants of assemblies where these texts were promulgated, or based on copies sent to bishops and other office bearers, creating quite a variety of different versions of the text that once originated. Today there are more than 300 extant witnesses. The website presents diplomatic transcriptions of the various collections as well as manuscript descriptions and further resources. A critical edition including a commentary and translation into German will appear in print. The project is funded by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, and is being prepared in close collaboration with the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) and the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH).

The decrees of the Frankish rulers are known as capitularies because of their subdivision into chapters (lat. ''capitula''). They are amongst the most important sources for the history of the Frankish kingdoms that covered large parts of Western and Central Europe from the 6th-9th century. They are instructions similar to laws, ordinances or provisions, regulating political, military, ecclesiastical, social, economic and cultural matters.

Capitularies shed light on Frankish rulers’s attempts to govern their extensive realm. Specifically they provide information about their efforts to reform church, society and empire, about mechanisms for dealing with political crises, and about rulers interacting with their officials.

The Base de Français Médiéval database (or BFM), founded in 1989, as of September 2023 comprises 219 Old and Middle French texts, covering a considerable geographic area and an extensive chronological breadth, with texts from the 9th century (including the first known French text, the Serments de Strasbourg) to the end of the 15th century. Both verse and prose texts are represented, as well as different genres and domains (e.g., fiction, history, hagiography, law, the sciences…). Thanks to its volume (approximately 6 450 000 words) and the diversity of the texts included, this database is unique in France for this period of the history of French, and, for Latinists, useful for corpus-based research on vernacular languages with Latin origins.

Since May 2012, the BFM is accessible via a web portal powered by the TXM corpus search and analysis platform. All texts can be searched, visualized and downloaded in PDF format. TEI P5 XML files are provided on demand by the corpus adminstrator (see contact information below). All BFM texts are tokenized, morphologically tagged and lemmatized with the help of TreeTagger (using BFM own parameter file). The direct speech is marked up with <tei:q> tags. As of June 2019, morphological annotation of 39 texts has been verified and corrected by experts.

The Bibliotheca legum project, a database of Carolingian secular law texts, is intended to provide an overview of the handwritten production of secular law texts and thus of the legal knowledge widespread in the medieval Frankish Empire. Not only codifications or legal codes that were valid in the Francia are included, but also all secular law texts copied there during this period. The purpose of this interactive album, consisting in a collection of transcription exercises, is not to be a substitute for a proper learning of this science, but simply to allow students or amateurs (genealogists, History enthusiasts, etc.) to train themselves in the practical aspect of palaeography, that is reading manuscript texts.

Areas have been placed on the images and associated with their transcription in Image Markup Tool (IMT), a free software. Then, the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) XML files created in IMT have been trnasformed into XHTML with an XSLT program. A CSS stylesheet and a javascript file control how the exercises work. This “palaeography exercise creation kit” is freely available on the IMT website, under “Paleography” (free software). The exercises of the album on this website have been created with this version of IMT, that generates XML TEI source files. But rather than publishing a static HTML export of those exercises, the XML TEI source files have been uploaded in a native XML database, eXist-db.

The website interface is written in PHP, that interacts with the eXist-db database via XML-RPC. The search function is provided by XQuery.

The XML TEI retrieved from the database is transformed into XHTML on the fly, through XSLT.

The goal of this project is to collect at least one edition of every Greek work composed between Homer and 250CE with a focus on texts that do not already exist in the Perseus Digital Library. So, e.g., neither Thucydides nor the text of the New Testament are here because both of these texts are already in Perseus. The TEI XML versions of the Perseus Greek texts (c. 10 million words) are available at GitHub, where they are being revised (upgrading to epiDoc compliant P5 TEI XML) and reorganized to be more readily CTS compliant.

This project has been generously funded by the Harvard Library Arcadia Fund, European Social Fund, and the Alexander-von-Humboldt professorship for Digital Humanities at Leipzig. The data has been produced in an international cooperation with the Center for Hellenic Studies, the Harvard Library, Mount Alison University, Tufts University, the University of Leipzig, and the University of Virginia.

The Text Alignment Network (TAN) is a suite of [[:category:XML|XML formats]] designed to maximize the syntactic and semantic interoperability of texts, annotations, and language resources. TAN is particularly suited to aligning texts with multiple versions (copies, translations, paraphrases), and to annotating quotations, translation clusters (word-to-word), and lexicomorphological features. Simple, modular, and networked, the TAN format allows users, working independently and collaboratively, to find, create, edit, study, align, and share their texts and annotations. The extensive validation rules are integrated into a library of functions that definitively interpret the format and provide a foundation for third-party tools and applications.

TAN XML is an extensive customization of [[Text Encoding Initiative]] XML, shifting traditional inline annotations to stand-off files, one file per type of annotation. Formats fall into one of three classes:

Class 1: transcriptions: TEI (all, slightly modified), TAN-T (like TEI, but closer to plain text)

Class 2: annotations and alignments of class 1 files
* TAN-A: basic claims about class 1 files, particularly supportive of assertions about text reuse, variations in witnesses
* TAN-A-lm: lexico-morphological data about any class 1 file
* TAN-A-tok: word/phrase-to-word/phrase alignments of any two texts that are purported to be alternate versions (normally a source and its translation)

Class 3: other types
* TAN-mor: a format for declaring the rules allowed in TAN-A-lm, by declaring the grammatical categories that are allowed, the codes that should be used, and what combinations are allowed or disallowed.
* TAN-voc: a format for declaring the IRIs and names of entities to be invoked in an other TAN file.

Some other innovative features include:
* A text pointer system that relies upon the reference coordinates of a division in a reference system, not @xml:id, stream, or tree.
* The ability to provide any number of concurrent, overlapping annotations on a given text, by any number of people.
* An allowance to define tokens precisely, via regular expression.
* Dependence upon Semantic Web / RDF principles, integrated with synonymous scoped ids, to support human-readable alternatives.
* A heavily regulated validation suite that deeply checks aspects not covered by TEI schema (e.g., Unicode normalization, dates set in the future) and allows the administrator of a file to "talk" to dependent files to communicate updates.
* An extensive XSLT function library that can be used for XSLT programming elsewhere, e.g., [https://github.com/textalign/TAN-regex TAN-regex, an extension of regular expressions for deeper use of Unicode], tan:diff(), and tan:collate().

Alpha (early) versions of TAN were released in 2018 and 2020. The latest release is version 2021.

'''Pie''' is a language independant lemmatizer implemented in python and built for "variation-rich languages" which includes Latin. It's a deep learning tool that can be trained and retrained with data in TSV format. As of 2019, it seems to be one of the state-of-the-art lemmatizers in terms of results. It can be trained jointly on morphology, POS and lemmatization tasks.
