The Digital Encyclopedia of Atticism is one of the research outputs of PURA, a five-year ERC Consolidator project (grant agreement no. 865817), which began in January 2021 at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. PURA investigates the theories of linguistic purism that were developed in ancient Greek culture, and the way in which they were received in later periods. The focus of our analysis is Atticist lexica, ancient ‘dictionaries’ that collect linguistic features to be cultivated or avoided in correct Greek.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
DEA contributes to the three main objectives of PURA:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1. to provide a comprehensive mapping of Atticist purism by analyzing the linguistic theories of Atticist lexica;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. to study the intellectual and cultural legacy of Atticism in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the early modern age by charting the history both of the lexica as books and of their authors;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3. to make the theories of these specialist and intricate texts more approachable and accessible outside the traditional format of critical editions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To fulfil these objectives, the three sections of DEA, all of which are open-access, collect our work on the lexicographic entries in the Atticist lexica and their linguistic history; the major scholars and works of the ancient and Byzantine Atticist debate; and the transmission of the lexica in the medieval and early modern periods. Ugarit is an online environment to perform manual translation alignment of texts. It provides an editor where users can import their corpora and align them manually, and publish them immediately in the homepage. The editor enables alignment of two or three texts, and it supports most ancient and Classical languages. Users can perform four levels of alignment: word-to-word (1-1), word-to-phrase (1-N), phrase-to-word (N-1) and phrase-to-phrase (N-N). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Ugarit homepage provides an interactive reading environment where users can read available aligned texts, click on aligned words to trigger a dynamic lexicon, and search for already aligned words. The reader also provides an automatic transliterator for non-Latin alphabets, basic statistics on published alignments, and two export options (XML or CSV). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Ugarit database provides training data, in the form of translation pairs, for the development of automated translation alignment models targeted at ancient languages. Most recently, Yousef et al. (2022) have published a transformer-based model that uses Ugarit alignments for fine-tuning in Ancient Greek.&lt;br /&gt;

Translation Alignment (TA) is a task derived from Natural Language Processing. Fundamentally, it consists in establishing correspondences between texts in different languages, in order to define which parts of a source text correspond to which parts of a second text. When performed across two languages, it is defined as bilingual alignment; when performed across multiple languages, it is defined as multi-lingual alignment.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The task of TA can be performed at various levels of granularity: from entire books to single chapters or sections, up to sentences and individual words. A set of texts aligned at some level is defined as parallel texts or parallel corpora. The output of a TA pipeline is a list of pairs of items (words, sentences, or larger chunks) which are often called Translation Pairs (TPs).  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Parallel corpora in modern and ancient languages are used for a variety of purposes, including training machine translation models, but also for automatic bilingual lexicon extraction, corpus linguistics analysis, translation history research, language learning, and cross-lingual annotation projection.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Methods==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
TA is performed automatically, semi-automatically, or entirely manually through annotation. There are several computational methods to perform TA. The first methods, such as IBM developed by Brown et al. (1993) were developed in the 90s, and were based on statistical lexical models. Later, Och and Ney (2003) introduced Giza++, which was considered the state-of-the-art in the field until the advent of transformer-based and neural models.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Transformer-based models for TA exploit multilingual contextualized language models to create accurate alignments, using varoius types of data for fine-tuning. The most recent automatic model for TA in ancient languages was developed by Yousef et al. (2022) for Ancient Greek and modern translations, and it is based on two multilingual contextualized language models, mBERT and XLM-R.  &lt;br /&gt;

The output of a TA pipeline is a list of pairs of items (words, sentences, or larger chunks) which are often called Translation Pairs (TPs).  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Parallel corpora in modern and ancient languages are used for a variety of purposes, including training machine translation models, but also for automatic bilingual lexicon extraction, corpus linguistics analysis, translation history research, language learning, and cross-lingual annotation projection.&lt;br /&gt;

==Methods==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
TA is performed automatically, semi-automatically, or entirely manually through annotation. There are several computational methods to perform TA. The first methods, such as IBM developed by Brown et al. (1993) were developed in the 90s, and were based on statistical lexical models. Later, Och and Ney (2003) introduced Giza++, which was considered the state-of-the-art in the field until the advent of transformer-based and neural models.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Transformer-based models for TA exploit multilingual contextualized language models to create accurate alignments, using varoius types of data for fine-tuning. The most recent automatic model for TA in ancient languages was developed by Yousef et al. (2022) for Ancient Greek and modern translations, and it is based on two multilingual contextualized language models, mBERT and XLM-R.  &lt;br /&gt;

ORBIS: The Stanford Geospatial Network Model of the Roman World reconstructs the time cost and financial expense associated with a wide range of different types of travel in antiquity. The model is based on a simplified version of the giant network of cities, roads, rivers and sea lanes that framed movement across the Roman Empire. It broadly reflects conditions around 200 CE but also covers a few sites and roads created in late antiquity.&lt;br /&gt;

Spanning one-ninth of the earth's circumference across three continents, the Roman Empire ruled a quarter of humanity through complex networks of political power, military domination and economic exchange. These extensive connections were sustained by premodern transportation and communication technologies that relied on energy generated by human and animal bodies, winds, and currents.&lt;br /&gt;
Conventional maps that represent this world as it appears from space signally fail to capture the severe environmental constraints that governed the flows of people, goods and information. Cost, rather than distance, is the principal determinant of connectivity.&lt;br /&gt;
For the first time, ORBIS allows us to express Roman communication costs in terms of both time and expense. By simulating movement along the principal routes of the Roman road network, the main navigable rivers, and hundreds of sea routes in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and coastal Atlantic, this interactive model reconstructs the duration and financial cost of travel in antiquity.&lt;br /&gt;

“Geolat – geography for Latin literature” is a research project in its prototypical startup phase, aimed at making accessible a digital library that contains the works of Latin literature through a query interface of geographic/cartographic type representing the geographic knowledge expressed in Latin texts. The project, whose principal investigator is dr. Maurizio Lana, was developed at the Department of Humanities of the University of Piemonte Orientale, and financially supported by Compagnia di San Paolo.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of its most innovative aspects is GO!, the geographical ontology, that aims to provide a complete and informative description of the geographical knowledge emerging from Latin literature, and to offer some minimal types of automatic reasoning. It plays a central role in intelligent spatial search on the web and serves as a shared vocabulary for spatial mark-up of Web sources. At this level the places of antiquity will be described with a variety of information - (in particular GPS coordinates, historical, geographical, cultural, etymological, semantic, and temporal annotations). GeoLat also offers URIs for identification of places - we want to build a stable resource, which reliably cites (links) other resources and which can reliably be cited (linked) by other resources. All the resources produced, as the primary sources and the geographic thesaurus and the list of textual annotations that link geographic locations and places text (identified by URI) will be made available on the Web according to the principles of Linked Open Data, and will help to enrich the “Web of Data” with new content.&lt;br /&gt;

Using GIS technology and accepted scholarly methods, this multi-disciplinary project intends to create a layered history of Rome by updating Forma Urbis Romae, the cartographic masterpiece of ancient Roman topography published in 1901 by archeologist Rodolfo Lanciani. This extremely accurate map measures 25 by 17 ft and uses an innovative graphic system that represents Rome’s historic urban fabric as a series of transparent layers from ancient to modern. The map remains the standard archeological reference for Rome even though it does not incorporate archeological discoveries uncovered since its original publication 100 years ago.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The end result will highlight the continuity between ancient and modern and reveal how ancient buildings shape subsequent urban form. It will also show the evolution of the archaic city of the hills into the Renaissance city of the flood plain and then the merging of the two into modern urban form. While classicists would find recent scholarship of ancient Rome, anthropologists and urbanists would learn more about the physical transformations of a vibrant city. On the other hand geographers would witness the application of a new tool for describing and assessing the development of the largest city of the ancient world.&lt;br /&gt;
