Description

The Corpus Numericum Gemmarum Antiquorum (CNGA) is an online corpus cataloging the iconography engraved on Hellenistic and Roman gemstones (3rd c. BCE – early 4th c. CE) as intaglio or cameo. It currently comprises more than 7,200 stones compiled from open sources, including museum collections, academic publications, art market catalogues, and private collections. The corpus is organised as an evolving iconographic ontology, in which every node and every stone entry has a persistent, citable URL. Two modes of access are available: hierarchical browsing of the iconographic classification, and keyword or thesaurus-based search. The project is documented in a blog post on Le Fil d'ArAr (Archéologie et Archéométrie, UMR 5138, CNRS/Université Lumière Lyon 2): https://lefildarar.hypotheses.org/6949
