How is this open source?

Joel, I'd like to question your claim that this is a good example of Open Source Critical Editions despite being behind a paywall? I know that open means "as in speech" not "as in beer," but how can this resource exemplify virtues like openness, reproducibility, and interchangeable standards if there are limitations both on access and on what readers can do with the texts?
