Description

The Classics and History 3D Centre is a joint centre of the Institute for Classical Studies and the Institute for Historical Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London. The Centre gathers together the expertise of a dozen or so scholars and researchers from across the institutes and departments of the School, and in 2017 invested in a few items of hardware for 3D imaging, modelling, printing and visualisation, including:

  • Craftbot desktop 3D printer
  • Ultimaker 3 Extended mid-range 3D printer
  • two high-performance PCs omtimised for video and image processing
  • HTC Vive Virtual Reality headset and a selection of VR mobile headsets
  • software for photogrammetry (Photoscan) and VR (Kubity VR)

The medium-term aims of the 3D Centre are to carry out experimentation in the use of 3D technologies for research in history, cultural heritage and archaeology, to encourage collaborations and research bids in the heritage sector, and to develop expertise and offer training for students, scholars and industry partners in the use of these technologies and methods.
