Hydrical administration in Cisalpine Gaul

(description as available in September 2009)

By Paola Tomasi

Supervisors: Rita Scuderi (Università degli Studi di Pavia), Claudio Zaccaria (Università di Trieste), Giovannella Cresci (Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia).

The project is part of the author's post doctoral research fellowship; the aim is to realize a printed paper and on-line edition (using the Epidoc standard) of the corpus of epigraphic documents (stone-epigraphies and instrumentum inscriptum) concerning water supply and its purpose (e.g. thermae, balnea, balinea, lavationes, aquae, fistulae, nymphaea, piscinae, salientes, etc. ) in Roman Cisalpine Gaul. The first step is to draw up an annotated catalogue (whenever possible, photos and/or apographs will be included) analysing every epigraphic document from an historical point of view (e.g. prosopographical, paleographical, linguistic aspects, etc.) and also investigating the archaeological excavations in that geographical context, related to (or supposed to be) the water-infrastructure/facilities, mentioned in the epigraphies.

The main purpose is to broaden research perspective and deepen it on administrative and economical aspects relating water’s use. By using EpiDoc standards the project aims to realize a digital corpus, to be published also on line, so that these documents could be available for further research and knowledge, by using a contemporary, international and easily-accessible standard.

This project now seems to have been published as:

It is not clear what (if anything) is digital output of this work, or the availibility of the EpiDoc files may be.
